Newport Police Arrest Woman Following Vehicle Pursuit, Assault on Officers
NEWPORT, Vermont — Chief Seth DiSanto reports that the Newport Police Department arrested a woman on multiple charges after she allegedly fled an attempted traffic stop.
MAKAYLA BELMORE, AGE 20, OF DERBY was arrested and charged with:
- Grossly Negligent Operation
- Attempt to Elude a Police Officer
- Attempted Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (Five Counts)
On Sunday, Dec. 15, an officer patrolling East Main Street in the area of Tavern on the Hill observed a vehicle he recognized as belonging to an individual known to police for having had a suspended license pass his location. The officer began to follow the vehicle and observed as the driver — later identified as BELMORE — followed closely behind another vehicle before improperly passing it.
When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, BELMORE fled at a high rate of speed, driving erratically and swerving into oncoming traffic. Out of a concern for public safety, the officer deactivated his cruiser’s lights and siren and abandoned the pursuit.
However, the office observed the vehicle turn near Buzzy’s Redemption in the area of Eagle’s Nest Drive and drove toward that location. The officer then located the vehicle stopped near 74 Eagles Nest Drive, where he recognized BELMORE, who is known to police, engaged in a verbal argument with another individual.
As officers arrived, they ordered BELMORE to the ground and she refused before being restrained and handcuffed. While being taken into custody BELMORE allegedly kicked two officers in the shin and pounded her own head on the hood of a cruiser.
BELMORE allegedly remained combative while being transported to the Newport Police Department and upon arrival at the station, including kicking or attempting to kick officers and splashing an officer with water from a holding cell toilet.
She is currently being held at the Northern State Correctional Facility on $2,500 bail.
Newport Police are continuing to investigate this incident and ask anyone who may have witnessed it to please contact police directly at 802-334-6733.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
