Somerset Police Respond to Crash Near Brayton Point

SOMERSET — Chief George McNeil reports that the Somerset Police and Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle crash and fire last night.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Somerset Police and Fire were dispatched to the Brayton Point Commerce Center for a report of a brush fire and possible explosions.

Upon arrival, responding officers determined that the fire originated outside of the main gate to the facility. Officers approaching the flames subsequently determined that the fire was coming from a vehicle that appeared to have crashed down a steep embankment before catching fire.

The female driver of the vehicle had escaped the car on her own prior to the arrival of first responders, who helped lift her from the embankment. The driver was transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital by Swansea Rescue with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Somerset firefighters extinguished the flames, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
