West Newbury Fire Department Mourns Passing of Former Assistant Chief

WEST NEWBURY — Chief Michael Dwyer and the West Newbury Fire Department regret to announce that retired Assistant Fire Chief Glenn Coffin has died.

Assistant Chief Coffin, 78, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Nov. 15. He served the town for over 45 years, achieving the second-highest rank in the department and at one time worked as a part-time dispatcher. He was the grandfather of Firefighter Cooper Carifio of the West Newbury Fire Department and Rowley Fire Department.

“We are thankful for Assistant Chief Coffin’s many dedicated years of service to our community,” Chief Dwyer said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Assistant Chief Coffin was born July 28, 1941 in Amesbury. He graduated from Amesbury High School in 1959 and then spent more than 30 years at Western Electric as a computer programmer. He was passionate about firefighting, freemasonry and sports of all competitive levels. He enjoyed being a spectator at all high school sporting events, especially when his grandchildren were involved.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 4-8 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, located at 2 Hillside Ave. in Amesbury.

The officers and members of St. Mark’s Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Newburyport will conduct Masonic Services at the start of visiting hours at 4 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at the West Newbury Congregational Church located at 308 Main St.
