NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray is pleased to announce that Newburyport Police Officer Megan Tierney received an Unsung Hero award at the recent Rotary District 7930 “Foundation Celebration of Community Heroes” event.

The event was held on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Andover Country Club.

“The Foundation Celebration dinner was an amazing event, where several local Unsung Heroes were honored. Each hero has an inspiring story that reminded all of us of the importance of the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self,’” Marshal Murray said. “Megan exemplifies this commitment to service through her continued dedication to the youth of this community through her role as School Resource Officer.”

Tierney began her career as a police officer in Newbury and worked there for three years. She has been an officer in Newburyport for seven years, including the last four as a School Resource Officer.

Through a grant from District 7930 and the Rotary foundation, Tierney was a part of the 2018-2019 District 7930 Vocational Training Team who went to England to learn how other international departments are implementing community-based substance abuse programs.

She is also certified as a sexual assault investigator, and, as a breast cancer survivor, has participated in major fundraisers for cancer research.
