Kearsarge Cross Country Teams Shine at Div. III Championships
NEW LONDON – Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to share that Kearsarge Regional High School’s cross country teams had a successful day at the 2019 NHIAA Div. III Championships at Derryfield Park in Manchester on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The KRHS girls’ team took home first place by edging out defending champion Hopkinton, and the boys’ team earned fifth place.
Both teams qualified for the statewide Meet of Champions event on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Nashua South High School.
Girls’ Team Triumphant
Mya Dube took home the individual title for the third year in a row as she ran the 5K course in 19:07. The senior pulled away during the second half of the race and finished a full 17 seconds ahead of the next-closest runner.
Junior Lili Baers and senior Jenna Baers finished fifth and sixth overall with times of 20:27.1 and 20:27.4, respectively.
Freshman Madelin Prak finished with a time of 21:15, just seconds ahead of a Hopkinton runner, good for 17th place. Senior Marla Richer, sophomore Katelyn Harvery and senior Ellie Madigan finished 31st, 33rd and 43rd overall to round out Kearsarge’s day.
The school’s overall score was 53 points, narrowly edging out Hopkinton’s tally of 57, to win the state title.
Co-ed varsity cross country coach Peter Angus said it took a full team effort for the girls team to win the day.
“We knew our team was strong upfront, but we needed to find our number 4-7 runners in order to be competitive,” Angus said. “As the season progressed the girls improved and we knew that if everyone ran well on Saturday we could compete for the championship. Being in an underdog role all season long really motivated the girls and it was great for it to all come together the way it did.”
This was the first time the KRHS girls’ cross country team won the Div. III state championship.
“Every girl ran better than expected, and we could not be more proud,” Angus said.
Boys Finish Strong
The boys’ team finished with 155 points on their way to a fifth-place overall finish. The team’s top individual runner was sophomore Gavin Garzia, who earned eighth place with a time of 17:30.
The rest of the team included senior Edward Stowell (15th place), senior Aaron Sullivan (30th place), freshman Matt Berns (49th place), sophomore Chris Stanchfield (56th place), junior Evan Pauling (69th place) and freshman Hunter Stanchfield (146th place).
“The boys improved quite a bit during the season through a lot of hard work and determination,” Angus said. “They surprised a lot of teams to get fifth place on Saturday, and it’s a great accomplishment for them to move on to the Meet of Champions.”
