Weymouth Public Schools Staff to Receive Active Shooter Response Training Next Week

WEYMOUTH — Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple announces that the Weymouth Public Schools will be hosting regional ALICE training at Weymouth High School during school hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 29 and 30.

ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, is a training that helps prepare individuals to handle the threat of an active shooter. It teaches individuals personal survival skills as well as how to lead others to safety during an act of violence. These skills seek to empower teachers, staff and students to make decisions that can save lives. The model is endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education.

Next week’s drills will train first responders and Weymouth Public Schools staff members, who will then be prepared to help lead additional training sessions in the future.

They will involve loud tones, artificial guns that produce noises mimicking real gunshots, and banging on classroom doors.

Some classes will be relocated during the two-day training period, but there will be no other disruptions to classroom instruction.

“ALICE is the most widely-used and accepted training among law enforcement, and it is important for our staff to be prepared in case of an emergency,” Superintendent Curtis-Whipple said. “There is nothing more important than the safety and security of our staff and students, and this training will provide invaluable resources for our school community to know in the case of an active shooter.”
