Hull High School Students Take Part in Annual Advisory Kick-Off Day
HULL — Superintendent Michael Devine is pleased to report that Hull High School students launched the 2019-2020 school year with the annual Advisory Kick-Off Day late last month.
“The day was full of positive energy and a lot of fun,” said Meghan Preble, Guidance Counselor and Co-Advisor for the Advisory Program. “It was great to see every student participate with their Advisories.”
The Advisory Program at Hull High School is designed to develop advocacy-based relationships between groups of students (“Advisories”) and a faculty adviser. Students stay with their adviser for all four years of high school.
As part of Advisory Kick-Off Day on Sept. 26, freshmen began their mornings participating in ice-breaker activities within their Advisories to further develop relationships among each other and their Advisory teacher. Students then spent the remainder of the morning participating in team building activities such as field races, kickball and hula hoop challenges. Students participated in these activities in the Hull High School gymnasium as well as at the James P. Sullivan Field (the “Dust Bowl”).
At the end of the morning students came back to the High School to participate in a barbecue lunch.
Sophomores participated in community service projects at the school and throughout town, led by Athletic Director and Community Outreach Coordinator Scott Paine.
“Kick-Off Day was a successful day for the sophomore class. Students did a wonderful job cleaning portions of Nantasket Beach and helping with projects at the Hull Council on Aging,” Athletic Director Paine said. “Students also did an amazing job reorganizing and cleaning the trophy cases in the main gym entrance. Students also spent the day weeding and cleaning up the school grounds in conjunction with the opening of the new turf field.”
Both freshmen and sophomores were brought to the auditorium, where they listened to a guest speaker, Jacobs Elementary School Assistant Principal Kyle Shaw.
Juniors and seniors took a chartered boat into Boston from Pemberton Pier to Long Wharf.
There juniors visited either Suffolk University, Boston University or Northeastern University, where they took part in campus visits with their Advisories and their advisers. This provided students an opportunity to explore the college experience and begin their college search.
Students got tours of the campus, heard about the admissions process and learned about the various opportunities each college or university has to offer.
Once seniors got off the boat they had the opportunity to experience one of two of Boston’s attractions — either the Freedom Trail to learn about its rich history as it relates to the development of Boston, or the New England Aquarium to learn about marine life.
Students then returned to Faneuil Hall for lunch before returning to Hull High School
For seniors, this visit is the culmination of the previous three years in which they have developed stronger, more connected bonds with their advisers. Students and advisers work together to plan the day and what they hope to experience.
“Bringing our students into Boston to explore a variety of colleges and universities, as well as learn about the rich history that took place right in our own backyard makes this day truly amazing,” said Daniel Mastrogiacomo, Assistant Principal and co-adviser of the Advisory Program. “We are so fortunate to be able to offer our students this opportunity.”
Hull High School Principal Nicole Nosek, Mastrogiacomo and Preble would like to extend their thanks on behalf of the High School Community to the Hull PTO and the Hull Boosters for helping fund Advisory Kick-Off Day. Their generous support helped defray some of the cost to make the day possible.
