Medway Public Schools to Host Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Playground at McGovern School

Kids Invited to Play on Playground Following Ceremony

MEDWAY — Superintendent Armand Pires is pleased to announce that a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held to officially open a brand-new playground at McGovern Elementary School this week, followed by local kids getting to play on the new equipment.

“We invite children and families to come to the McGovern School on Thursday to play on the new playground and see the new equipment,” Superintendent Pires said. “Recess is an important part of the school day where kids can interact with one another outside of a classroom setting and spend some time outdoors. Having this brand-new equipment with lots of different activities to do will help to enhance recess and also provide a great space for the community to come out and play after school.”

WHEN:

Thursday, Sept. 19, at 3:30 p.m.

WHERE:

McGovern Elementary School, 9 Lovering St., Medway

WHO:

  • Superintendent Armand Pires
  • Susan Dietrich, Chair of the Medway School Committee
  • John Foresto, Chair of the Medway Board of Selectmen
  • McGovern Elementary School Principal Amy McDonald

WHAT:

Medway Public Schools are proud to announce the opening of two brand-new playgrounds at the McGovern School and Francis Burke-Memorial Elementary School this week.

To celebrate, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the McGovern School on Thursday. Following the ceremony, children and families will be welcomed to try out the new playground.

Funding for both playgrounds was paid for in part by generous donations from the Medway Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (MEPTO) and Medway Extended Day (MEDI). The rest of the funds were approved at Town Meeting in May.

The playgrounds were designed and built by Medway-based outdoor equipment supplier M.E. O’Brien and Sons, Inc. Construction on both playgrounds began over the summer and was completed on the week of Aug. 26, before the start of the new school year.

Both playgrounds are compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and will be used by about 500 students at the Burke-Memorial School and 350 students at the McGovern School each day.

“The previous playgrounds were both over 15 years old and this is a project that has been in the works for the past few years,” Superintendent Pires said. “The new equipment is age-appropriate for our elementary school students and allows for a more spread out feel with several different elements for the kids to play and interact with.”
