Kearsarge Elementary School Students Take Part in 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
NEW LONDON– Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to announce that Kearsarge Elementary and Sutton Elementary School students took part in a local 9/11 remembrance ceremony on this week.
At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, students from both elementary schools joined New London Firefighters, police, veterans, town officials and members of the community at the New London Fire Department Headquarters to remember all those lost on Sept. 11, 2001 and in the ensuing Global War on Terrorism.
“It is important for students to remember and learn about the events of September 11, 2001, and we’re thankful our local Fire Department continues to include students in their ceremony,” Superintendent Feneberg said. “This somber day in our nation’s history is also an opportunity for students to witness the way in which our community and country come together in times of need.”
Students that attended the ceremony sang “Patriot Day” by Teresa Jennings, read essays about local first responders they interviewed and helped raise a new flag on the Fire Department’s flag pole.
Students throughout Kearsarge Regional School District observed the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on Wednesday at their own schools, with each one including the anniversary in its morning announcements and holding a moment of silence.
“Last night 18 years ago, millions of Americans went to bed quietly, with no thought that the next morning their world would change forever,” Kearsarge Regional High School Social Studies Teacher Curtis Roddy said to students over Wednesday morning’s announcements. “In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live each day to the fullest, enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.”
