ROWLEY — Police Chief Scott A. Dumas and Fire Chief James C. Broderick report that the Rowley Police and Fire Departments are responding to a Tier 1 Hazmat incident involving an unknown gas leak at a Market Basket.

Police and fire were called to the Market Basket on the Newburyport Turnpike at approximately 3 p.m. for a report of an unknown gas leak. The entire strip mall where the store is located has been evacuated and closed indefinitely.

Eight people have been transported by ambulance to area hospitals and more than 50 people have been evaluated on scene for respiratory issues.

The leak is believed to be isolated to the Market Basket building, and a state hazmat team is on scene.

Numerous area agencies have responded to the scene to provide mutual aid, and the leak remains under investigation by the Rowley Fire Department.
