Salem and Peabody Students Visit Essex Tech Ahead of Launch of New CTE Program
DANVERS — Twenty juniors from Salem and Peabody made a special visit to Essex Tech to tour the school and meet teachers ahead of their enrollment in a new program this fall.
In June, Essex Tech received a $300,000 Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation grant to support the creation of an Advanced Manufacturing and Construction and Craft Laborer program for high school students at Salem and Peabody High Schools.
Students in the new two-year programs will attend class each weekday at their respective high schools in the morning and will travel to Essex Tech for vocational and technical education in the afternoon.
On Wednesday, July 31, students met with teachers and administrators to learn more about coursework, and took tours of the Advanced Manufacturing and Construction and Craft Laborer shops. Students were able to participate in hands on demonstrations and ask questions about career technical education.
“This was a great opportunity for students to get a first-hand look at where they’ll be spending a good portion of their day every week,” Superintendent Heidi Riccio said. “We’re very excited to launch this new program in September for Salem and Peabody students interested in gaining skills in these in-demand industries.”
The programs will also allow students at each school to earn hours toward apprenticeships and credentials in either career field, and through a partnership with North Shore Community College, participants can take additional courses to gain credits toward an associate’s degree. Both advanced manufacturing and construction workers are in high demand for workforce placement in northeastern Massachusetts.
“The Peabody Public Schools looks forward to building a partnership with Essex North Shore,” said Superintendent Cara Murtagh. “We want to provide our Peabody students with a comprehensive education that supports all learners.”
A few spots are still available for interested juniors at both Salem and Peabody High Schools. Those who would like to sign up should contact Maryann Gearin at mgearin@essextech.net
