Newbury Fire Department Responds to Woman Injured by Wave at Plum Island Beach
NEWBURY — Chief Douglas Janvrin reports that the Newbury Fire Department responded to Plum Island today after a woman was injured by a wave.
The Newbury Fire Department was dispatched to the beach near the Fordham Way entrance on Plum Island at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday for a report that a woman had been injured by a wave. Upon arrival, first responders learned that a 67-year-old Lexington woman had been in the water when a wave knocked her over, injuring her knee.
The woman was conscious and alert, however, and the Newbury Fire and Police Departments used a small, all terrain vehicle to extricate her from the beach. She was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital, with non-life threatening injuries.
“We were able to respond quickly, extricate the victim from the beach and transport her to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” Chief Janvrin said. “We encourage beach goers to exercise caution while swimming or walking along the water. The size and strength of waves can change quickly, and it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings.”
