Ipswich Police Department Responds to Serious Crash Involving 3-Wheeled Electric Scooter
IPSWICH — Chief Paul Nikas reports that the Ipswich Police Department responded to a crash Monday night where a man operating a 3-wheeled electric scooter was seriously injured.
At approximately 5 p.m., Ipswich Police responded to the intersection of North Main Street and South Main Street (Route 1A/Route 133) for a report of a crash.
Upon arrival, officers located a 65-year-old Ipswich man who was seriously injured. The man was transported by ambulance to the former Cable Hospital, where he was then picked up by a medical helicopter. The man was flown to Tufts Medical Center and his condition is unknown at this time.
Through an on-scene investigation, police determined that the man was operating a 3-wheeled electric scooter when he came down a hill on North Main Street and struck a Honda Accord that was sitting in traffic on South Main Street.
The driver of the Honda remained at the scene and was cooperative with police. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Ipswich Police and the Massachusetts State Police.
The victim was not wearing a helmet or protective gear when the crash occurred.
“I would like to stress the importance to anyone who is using or operating these electric scooters or electric bicycles that they should always wear a helmet and protective riding gear and only operate these devices within the manufacture’s operational guidelines,” Chief Nikas said.
