LITTLETON — Chief Matthew Pinard is pleased to share that the largest class of cadets to date graduated from the Littleton Police Department’s 8th Annual Student Police Academy today.

Approximately 30 cadets took part in the Annual Student Police Academy this week, a five day program for kids in grades six through eight, featuring an in-depth and interactive look at the roles and responsibilities of police officers.

During the program, students visited the Littleton Fire Department, where they learned about the duties firefighters undertake daily, including fire prevention, responding to reports of fires and other emergencies.

The cadets were also visited this week from the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council’s (NEMLEC) SWAT team and the NEMLEC Motor Unit. The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing is also visiting the cadets today, landing on the field behind Littleton Police Headquarters.

“It’s been a pleasure for us all to work with these cadets and show them what working in law enforcement and public safety looks like,” Chief Pinard said. “Our goal is to give students a comprehensive view of the various roles available in these fields, and provide them with a glimpse of what the police academy is like.”

Members of the Littleton Police Department also gave the students lessons on traffic and criminal laws, crime scene processing, investigative tactics and special operations. Officers also acted as “drill instructors” during the program, mimicking the physical rigor of a true police academy.

The academy was launched in 2012 by Chief Matthew Pinard, who was a Sergeant at the time, and Detective Sgt. Pablo Fernandez.
