Oliver Ames High School Students to Attend Leadership Development Conference

EASTON – Superintendent Lisha Cabral is pleased to share that five Oliver Ames High School students will attend the Youth to Youth International Eastern States Conference this week.

The conference will be held from July 25-28 at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The conference invites youth from neighboring states to participate in leadership development opportunities to empower themselves and make an impact in their communities. The conference will focus on topics such as substance use, mental health and gender.

Each of the five Oliver Ames students attending are representatives of one of the high school’s wellness clubs, which include: Healthy Tigers (Mind, Body, and Soul), The 84 (MA Youth Fighting Against Tobacco) and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). The students were chosen to attend the conference based upon the recommendations of the clubs’ advisers and Oliver Ames High School Principal Wes Paul.

The students will be attending the conference with Easton Middle School nurse and Easton Wings of Hope Steering Committee Member Eileen Gardner.

The conference and trip is part of a continued partnership between Easton Public Schools and Easton Wings of Hope to prevent youth substance use. Easton Wings of Hope is a community coalition that strives to help guide Easton’s youth toward making healthy choices that are recognized, valued and accessible to all. Its mission is to prevent youth substance use through education, awareness and policy change.

Easton Wings of Hope previously worked with Easton Public Schools to send Principal Paul and health teacher Justin Tienhaara to the Montana Summer Institute conference.

“These student groups do important work in encouraging their fellow students to live healthy lives,” Principal Paul said. “We want to support our students as they grow as peer leaders and we’re thankful to Easton Wings of Hope for supporting this vision and providing opportunities such as this conference to our student leaders.”
