Sonja Metcalf Joins Medway Public Schools as New Assistant High School Principal
MEDWAY –Superintendent Armand Pires is pleased to announce that Sonja Metcalf will serve as Medway High School’s new assistant principal.
Metcalf began her new role on Monday, July 8. For the past three years, she served as the assistant principal at North Attleboro High School. She also worked as a Spanish teacher at the middle and high school levels for 15 years at various locations including, King Philip Regional School District, Douglas Public Schools and Northbridge Public Schools. From 2001-2015, she also served as an assistant band director at Douglas Public Schools.
“I live in the area, so I’ve known for quite some time that Medway is a great community and has a strong school district,” Metcalf said. “When I saw the job posting, I was immediately interested in the opportunity to join this team. I knew that my educational philosophy was in line with the district’s core values and vision. I strongly believe in fostering strong social emotional wellness, empowering students, and creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.”
This school year, Metcalf will mainly work with freshmen and sophomores at Medway High School, and will help oversee the launch of the school’s new Freshman Academy program. For the first year, educators will be grouped into two teams this fall, serving approximately 80 ninth grade students each. The teams will include English, science, math and social studies teachers, as well as a counselor and a special education teacher who will work together to monitor the academic, social, emotional and behavioral progress of each student.
“I really want to become a part of the community and add to the great teaching and learning that’s already well established here,” Metcalf said. “I think I bring a unique perspective since I have had 15 years of teaching experience at both the high school and middle school levels. I’ve taught in various educational settings as both a traditional classroom teacher and as a music director. Those experiences have provided me with a well-rounded background and perspective that I can bring to Medway High School.”
Metcalf holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a master’s degree in education from Endicott College.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sonja to our team at Medway Public Schools,” Superintendent Pires said. “She has a remarkable background as both an educator and an administrator, and I am confident her experiences will make her an invaluable resource to our school community, especially as we work to adopt new social emotional supports and programming like the Freshman Academy.”
Students, parents and guardians are invited to attend meet and greets with Metcalf on Wednesday, Aug. 7 and Thursday, Aug. 15 at 9 a.m. at Medway High School. Metcalf will also be present at the Freshman Orientation events on Wednesday, August 21.
“We’re so excited to have Ms. Metcalf join the Medway High School community,” said Medway High School Principal John Murray. “She is an excellent complement to our leadership team with her student-centered outlook and her ability to support teaching and learning. We’re already off to a great start and are looking forward to our meet and greets with students and families this summer!”
