Burlington Police and Fire Departments to Hold Battle of the Badges Blood Drive

Residents Encouraged to Donate

BURLINGTON — Fire Chief Steven Yetman and Police Chief Michael Kent announce that the Burlington Fire and Police Departments are engaging in a friendly competition to benefit the American Red Cross.

The two public safety agencies will participate in a Battle of the Badges blood drive next week, and residents are encouraged to join.

WHEN:

Wednesday, July 24 from 2-7 p.m.

WHERE:

Burlington Recreation Center, Murray-Kelly Room, 61 Center St.

WHAT:

The Burlington Police and Fire Departments have challenged each other to a Battle of the Badges blood drive, with both departments vying to have the most pints of blood donated on their behalf.

This friendly competition will help offset the shortage of blood that typically occurs in the summer months.

“One unit of blood can save up to three lives,” Chief Yetman said. “By simply donating, we can help patients with cancer, those who have been in serious accidents, burn victims and people undergoing transplants.”

Anyone can take part in the contest and give blood to help the departments reach their goal of 50 units of donated blood. The donation process typically lasts less than an hour.

The department with the most pints donated will win a trophy and bragging rights.

“Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood,” Chief Kent said. “Please consider donating to help save lives.”

To participate in the Battle of the Badges blood drive, the public should call the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Individuals looking to donate can streamline the donation experience by clicking here to complete the pre-donation reading and health history questions on the day of their appointment.
