Maynard Issues Affordable Housing Request for Residents at New Development
MAYNARD — Town Administrator Greg Johnson reports that Maynard Affordable Housing Trust recently filed a request with the state to give residents preference for housing in a new mixed-use development in town.
On Tuesday, June 18, the Maynard Affordable Housing Trust filed a request signed by the Board of Selectmen with the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (DCHD). The request seeks to allow Maynard residents to receive “local preference” for 15 affordable residential units in the Vue at Maynard Crossing at 129 Parker St.
If the town’s request is accepted, 70 percent (15 units) of the affordable one and two bedroom units in the development would be set aside for local preference. This is the maximum amount DHCD will allow to be dedicated for local preference. Should the request be accepted, existing Maynard residents that meet affordable guidelines will have priority over non-residents.
The new, mixed-use development is set to be completed by the end of the summer.
“This is an important step to ensuring Maynard remains a ‘community for a lifetime’ for our residents,” said Town Planner Bill Nemser. “We are talking about housing that is affordable to a large swath of Maynard’s population: young professionals, working parents, first responders, people just starting out and of course, our seniors.”
The affordable housing units in the development will be open to those with a household income at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Approximately 36 percent of Maynard households would qualify for affordable housing.
“We know that affordable housing is a primary concern for many of our residents, regardless of their age,” Nemser said. “Maynard is a town where we want people to be able to live, work and thrive for their whole lives, should they choose to stay, and making more affordable housing accessible to our residents is one more step toward that goal.”
Those who would like to apply for housing at the Vue at Maynard Crossing can join a wait list by emailing their full name and contact information to [email protected], and stating that they are interested in an affordable unit at the Vue at Maynard Crossing development. A housing application packet will be sent by mail. A lottery held by the developer will be used to determine application selection order.
