Two Burlington Police Lieutenants Complete Rigorous Senior Management Program
BURLINGTON — Chief Michael Kent is pleased to report that two members of the Burlington Police Department recently completed the Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP).
Lt. Timothy McDonough completed the 74th session, held from June 2-20, and Lt. Daniel Hanafin graduated from the 75th session, which ran from June 9-27.
“The Senior Management Institute for Police is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our command officers to sharpen their skills in a variety of key areas, and I’m glad that Lt. McDonough and Lt. Hanafin were able to participate,” Chief Kent said. “Completing the program will make them both better leaders within our department, and I’m proud of them for taking on this challenge and completing it successfully.”
SMIP is a program of the Police Executive Research Forum — an independent research organization that focuses on critical issues in policing. The program provides senior police executives with intensive training in the latest management concepts and practices used in business and government. Participants also engage in discussions about the top issues facing law enforcement today. Law enforcement leaders from around the world participated in the program, exposing Lts. McDonough and Hanafin to a more global perspective on the policing profession.
Police leave the course with a clear understanding of general management theory, policy development, planning processes and organizational behavior. Topics include:
- Diversity
- Political management
- Organizational strategy
- Performance management
- Organizational change
- Leadership
- Managerial problem-solving
- Career planning
- Negotiation
- Process analysis
- Media relations
- New policing strategies and innovations
The program requires extensive reading with classroom discussion. Participants are also encouraged to apply the concepts and issues presented to their own organizations.
Because of the course’s intensity and daily group study, during the week, everyone is required to reside on the Boston University campus, where the classes are taught.
