West Newbury Firefighters Visit Town Summer Recreation Program
WEST NEWBURY — Chief Michael Dwyer is pleased to share that the West Newbury Fire Department recently visited a local Summer Recreation Program.
On Tuesday, June 18, firefighters Duncan Weaver, Andy Greenbaum and Tristan LaSala brought the West Newbury Fire Department’s Engine 23 to visit approximately 75 elementary and middle school aged children at the West Newbury Summer Recreation Program at the Dr. John C. Page School on Main Street.
“Our firefighters always enjoy visiting the recreation program at the Page School, showing the kids the fire engine, sharing safety information and explaining what firefighting entails,” Chief Dwyer said. “And kids always enjoy seeing a fire engine, holding a fire hose and trying on some firefighting gear. It’s a great community event, and it lets some of the youngest members of our community form a connection with their fire department.”
The West Newbury Fire Department visits the camp a few times each summer to teach children in the program about firefighting and community spirit. Firefighters that visited the program covered a wide variety of safety information, including quizzing parents on smoke alarms, calling 911 for emergencies, and planning and practicing escape routes at home.
“The West Newbury Fire Department never disappoints when they come to visit Rec,” said Krista Niles, assistant director of the West Newbury Summer Recreation Program. “Kids at summer rec look forward to their visit each year. From sitting in the fire truck, to trying on gear, to spraying the fire hose- the crew always provides an informative, hands-on experience.”
