Tyngsborough Police Arrest Greater Lowell Tech Student After Threat Made
Threat, Made via Social Media, Determined not to be Credible
TYNGSBOROUGH — Police Chief Richard Howe and Superintendent Joe Mastrocola report that the Tyngsborough Police Department arrested a Greater Lowell Tech student this morning after he allegedly made threats over social media to harm others.
The social media threat was determined to not be credible, and police and school officials have determined that there is no danger to the school community.
A 15-year-old juvenile male from Lowell is charged with Threatening to Use Dangerous Items.
Late last evening, Greater Lowell Tech administrators were made aware of a post on Snapchat, where a student made a threat to commit an act of violence. There was no direct reference to Greater Lowell Tech, however school officials, following the established protocols and procedures, immediately contacted the Tyngsborough Police Department.
The police department launched an investigation, and school resource officers determined that the post was made by the juvenile suspect. The suspect was identified, located and arrested at school this morning.
Greater Lowell Tech opened without disruption this morning.
The police department has determined there was never any danger or ongoing threat to the school or community. No weapons or other dangerous items were found.
“Community members should be assured that there is no danger to students, faculty or staff at Greater Lowell Tech,” Chief Howe said. “I want to commend the school resource officers who worked on this case and quickly determined the origin of the threatening post.
“I wish to further recognize those who brought this threat to the attention of school administrators. Community members are our eyes and ears, and in this case, a student saw something and said something, contributing to the safety of their school community.”
Added Superintendent Mastrocola: “We would like to thank the Tyngsborough Police Department for their aggressive police work that led them to very quickly determine that the threat was not credible. Through their diligent investigative work, officers and school officials were able to identify the juvenile responsible and hold him accountable for his actions.”
