Maynard Public Schools Reaches Settlement with Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards
Fine Amount will Go Towards Ongoing Asbestos Remediation
MAYNARD — Superintendent of Schools Robert Gerardi is pleased to announce that the Maynard Public Schools has reached a settlement with the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards. Under the agreement, in lieu of paying the civil penalties originally assessed of $42,500, those funds can be used for operations and maintenance for AHERA compliance.
The settlement saves the school district tens of thousands of dollars, and it acknowledges that the Maynard Public Schools did not specifically intend to violate any laws or regulations in its reporting and documenting of damaged asbestos building materials.
“We are engaged in a long-term plan to ensure a safe, healthy and vibrant future for the entire Green Meadow Elementary School Community,” Superintendent Gerardi said. “I am extremely grateful to the DLS for acknowledging the progress being made at Green Meadow and allowing us to focus our financial resources on the vital work of repairing the building.”
The settlement requires MPS to provide all receipts from the ongoing work to DLS.
The school district announced on March 5 it was appealing the Feb. 12 DLS civil citation and fine.
The Town of Maynard has also appealed its own separate $20,000 civil penalty from DLS. That appeal remains ongoing.
