Whittier Students to Host Benefit for Alzheimer’s Research
HAVERHILL — Nine students from the Allied Health Center, Culinary, and Business and Marketing programs will host an event later this week to increase awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and raise money for research to find a cure.
WHEN:
Sunday, March 31, 1-4 p.m.
WHERE:
Whittier cafeteria, 115 Amesbury Line Road
WHAT:
Organized by Whittier’s health occupation students, the event grew out of the Music and Memory Program they created for dementia patients last year.
This event will feature guest speaker Lenore Jackson-Pope, Co-Director of Primary Care Outreach for Alzheimer’s Research at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Guests will be treated to appetizers and will enjoy a silent auction — featuring Adirondack chairs, a $250 wine tasting and Red Sox tickets — along with raffle items that include gift cards from area restaurants, retail stores, tanning salons and hair salons. All money raised will be donated to Massachusetts General Hospital Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
During the planning stages of the project, Business and Marketing students created promotional materials, financial statements and procedures for the raffles and auction. Culinary Arts students planned the menu and will set-up the cafeteria.
Tickets are $30 and may be purchased at Whittier’s school store or online here.
“I’m impressed that the three groups have really demonstrated an awareness and a passion for the devastation this disease causes,” said Jane Moskevitz, SkillsUSA adviser and Allied Health Center instructor. “We’re excited to host this event and hope that community members will join us.”
The planning and execution of the event will be featured as three separate projects in the Career Pathways Showcase at this year’s SkillsUSA state competition, which will be held April 25-27.
Allied Health Center students are: Seniors Larissa Havey, of Amesbury; Allasandra Thompson, of Haverhill; and Emily Shal, of Amesbury.
