WHAT:
The Patriots’ Day Parade is the town’s longest-standing celebration, and recognizes Arlington’s rich patriotic history and military heritage. The festivities also commemorate the beginning battles of the Revolutionary War on April 19, 1775.
Elias G. Katsos, a World War II Army veteran and Purple Heart Medal recipient, has been chosen by the Patriots’ Day Parade Committee and Veterans Council to be the 2019 Grand Marshal for the parade. His other military decorations include a European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. A lifelong Arlington resident, Katsos and his wife, Constantina, raised their four children in town. Katsos will be joined at the parade by his 9-year-old granddaughter, Alexandra “Lexi” Dorow, who has written a book chronicling her grandfather’s military service.
Longtime Arlington resident Bob Bowes, of Bowes Real Estate, has been named the 2019 Honorary Grand Marshal by the Patriots’ Day Parade Committee. The honor recognizes Bowes for 50 years of service to the Town, including his work with the Arlington Boys and Girls Club, Arlington Tourism and Economic Development Committee, the Children’s Room, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, the Arlington Health and Human Services Department, and the Patriots’ Day Parade Committee. He has also been named the “2019 Citizen of the Year” by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce.
Many community groups will be marching in the parade, in addition to local and regional parade bands and entertainers.
