Maynard’s Fowler School Briefly Shelters in Place after Concerning Statement by Student
No Danger to Students Found
MAYNARD — Superintendent of Schools Robert Gerardi and Police Chief Mark W. Dubois report that the Fowley School briefly went into shelter in place mode after a student reported to a teacher that there might be a weapon in the school.
Shortly after 10 a.m., it was reported to administrators that a student told a teacher that they thought they saw a weapon in another student’s locker. The Principals Michael Barth and Dan Costello immediately contacted the Maynard Police Department school resource officer. Principal Costello asked students and staff to shelter in place during the investigation.
An investigation was undertaken immediately, including a search of the building and the locker in question and review of school surveillance footage. No weapons or any other dangerous items were found. Based on the investigation, a determination was made that there was no danger to the school community, and the shelter in place request was lifted just after 11 a.m.
“I want to commend our students, staff and administrators for their calm and patience today as this situation was resolved with minimal disruption to the school day,” Superintendent Gerardi said. “Thankfully, school and police officials working closely were able to quickly determine that there was no danger to the school.”
