HOLBROOK — Chief William Smith is pleased to announce that signups have begun for the Holbrook Police Department’s 2019 Junior Police Academy.

The course, taught by Holbrook Police officers, teaches kids the core values of integrity and discipline in a structured environment that helps to build their self-esteem and further their understanding about who police officers are and what their jobs entail.
The academy is open to students entering sixth and seventh grade, and will be held at the Holbrook Middle High School, 245 South Franklin St. from July 29 to August 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
It’s offered through the department’s Community Outreach Program, which features various events and services throughout the year meant to strengthen ties with Holbrook residents.
“Last year was our first year hosting the academy and it was a great success,” Chief Smith said. “We hope to build off of last year and provide a great summer program for local kids who are interested in learning more about law enforcement while also having some fun.”
During the junior academy, students will attend classroom sessions with lectures, demonstrations by police officers in the areas of law, drug awareness and first responder skills, as well as physical training sessions and field trips.
“Last year’s group of students were fantastic and came away with a better understanding about law enforcement and how the Holbrook Police Department helps to protect our community,” Holbrook Police Community Outreach Officer Michael Eshner said. “We are greatly looking forward to meeting our next group of students and have a lot of great classes and activities in store.”
The cost for registration is $75, which covers operating costs and a student uniform that will be issued to each junior officer and is required to be worn each day of the academy.
Registration is open through May 1 on a first come, first served basis with priority given to Holbrook residents.
Applications are available online by clicking here, or at the front desk at the police station. For more information, click here for a copy of the academy info sheet.
