Nahant Fire Department Invites Community to Ceremonial Wet-Down of its New Engine
NAHANT — Chief Michael Feinberg is pleased to invite members of the community to join the Nahant Fire Department in celebrating the arrival of its new fire engine.
WHEN:
Monday, March 11, at 6 p.m.
WHERE:
Nahant Fire Department, 67 Flash Road, Nahant
WHAT:
In accordance with a long-standing fire service tradition, the Nahant Fire Department will welcome its new engine into service with a ceremonial wet-down that is free and open to the public.
The wet-down is a ritual that dates back to the late 1800s, when horse drawn pumpers were used throughout the fire service. Back then, newly-commissioned horses would be washed alongside their pumpers at the fire house before being pushed back into the fire house bay by firefighters.
While horse-drawn pumpers are now a relic of the past, the tradition continues today as fire departments welcome their new apparatus and officially induct them into service.
“Wetting down a new engine is a great way for the community to celebrate the arrival of a new fire engine,” Chief Feinberg said. “I welcome all of our residents to come and join us in welcoming Engine 31
The new vehicle is a Sutphen Monarch Chassis that can dispense 1,500 gallons of water per minute. It was constructed in Pennsylvania and delivered to Nahant on March 1.
