Esten Elementary Celebrates Read Across America Day
ROCKLAND — Superintendent Alan Cron is pleased to share that several town and school officials visited Esten Elementary School on Friday in celebration of Read Across America Day.
Read Across America Day is an annual reading event that was launched in 1997 by the National Education Association on, or near, March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. The annual reading initiative seeks to motivate students to read, and have fun while doing so. Each year, schools, libraries, municipalities, and community groups hold activities on Read Across America Day to celebrate reading.
On Friday, March 1, several Rockland town and school officials visited kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade classrooms at Esten Elementary and read a favorite book to students.
“This is the fifth year that we have had community members visit as guest readers for Read Across America,” said Esten Principal Marilyn Smith. “I think it is important to show our students that everyone from all professions has books that they loved as children. It is always nice to share a good book.”
Superintendent Cron visited Kathleen Ferry’s fourth grade class on Friday.
“Read Across America Day is a great opportunity for us to take a step back and simply share the joy of reading with students,” Superintendent Cron said. “Thank you to all the volunteers who visited and read a book on Friday. It really inspires students to be visited by members of the community and celebrate reading.”
Rockland firefighter Scott Margolis also read to students. He chose the book “Molly, By Golly!” by Dianne Ochiltree to read to fourth grade students in Ms. Kelly Holigitas’ class. The book by is about Molly Williams, America’s first female firefighter.
Other visiting readers included School Resource Officer Ethan Schnabel, Rogers Middle School Principal Beth Bohn, Rockland Technology Director Tim Wells, Rockland Fire Chief Scott Duffey, and Rockland’s Food Services Director Adele Leonard.
