King Philip Senior Receives Distinguished Scholar Award for Artwork
WRENTHAM — Superintendent Paul Zinni is pleased to announce that King Philip Regional High School senior Alexis Zitomer received a Distinguished Scholars Award this winter from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
“When I found out that I received the award, I was elated,” Zitomer said. “I was very honored to have been given the chance in the first place, as only one student from each high school can be nominated. Receiving the award after earning the nomination gave me the feeling that all of my hard work throughout the years was paying off.”
Zitomer was recommended for the award by Cathleen Carneiro, Art Department Curriculum Team Leader at King Philip High. To be considered for the award, students were required to have a minimum GPA of 3.74 on a 4.0 scale, honors awards from competitions or other recognitions, demonstrate leadership skills, achieve a minimum 1410 SAT combined math and critical reading score or an ACT composite score of at least 30, and exhibit outstanding arts, performing arts, or writing ability.
“The criteria are very difficult,” Carneiro said. “Right away I thought of Alexis. She had visited the school with her parents already and loved it. She’s also as talented in music as she is in fine arts, so she has this really neat, well-rounded set of talents that’s stellar.”
Growing up, Zitomer said she spent a lot of time in an art studio her mom ran, and art has always been a big part of her life.
“Ever since I could hold a crayon, I have been drawing,” Zitomer said.
After she graduates from KPHS this spring, Zitomer plans to study animation or game design, and is interested in studying the animation program at the SCAD. However, she is still waiting to hear back from other colleges as well.
“I have been dreaming of being an animator since I was 11 years old when I took my first animation art class, and I am lucky enough to say that I am on the pathway for that dream to become reality,” Zitomer said. “However, I know for a fact that no matter where I end up, art will always follow me there.”
