King Philip Middle School Students Compete in Mathematics Competition
NORFOLK — Superintendent Paul Zinni and Assistant Superintendent/KPMS Principal Susan Gilson are pleased to announce that several King Philip Regional Middle School students participated in the New England Math League competition last week.
The event, held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, was supervised by Mary Beth Runyon, the middle school’s Math Curriculum Team Leader.
The contest was for seventh and eighth grade students who volunteered to take part in the competition, which consisted of students taking a very difficult 35 question test in under 30 minutes.
About 140 students signed up and participated in the contest. Students who scored well received a certificate and the highest scorers were invited to attend a summer math camp hosted by the Math League.
Top Scorers from seventh grade:
- Dean Cardner
- Lakshya Jain
- Nicholas Cuica
- Elliot Davis
- Zach Pontes
- Beck Sawtelle
- Andrew Deguzman
Top Scorers from eighth grade:
- Aedan Derfler-Murphy
- Kevin Smith
- Alysse Moskal
- Turag Ikbal
- Helena Bekele
“I want to congratulate our top scorers and commend all of the students that volunteered to take part in the competition,” Runyon said. “With 30 minutes to complete the test, that gave each student under one minute to complete each question. I was really quite impressed by their work.”
