Sudbury Fire Department Earns Grant to Add Four New Members
SUDBURY — Chief John Whalen is pleased to announce that the Sudbury Fire Department has earned a grant that will allow it to add four new firefighters to its roster.
Sudbury Fire received a $605,698 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The grant funds will be dispersed over the course of three years to cover a portion of the costs of the new firefighters’ salary and benefits. Grant funds will cover 75 percent of the firefighters’ salary and benefits in the first two years, and 35 percent in year three.
“This is an excellent opportunity for our department to enhance our staffing capabilities without a tremendous initial impact on our budget,” Chief Whalen said. “I’m grateful for the resources and flexibility that the SAFER Grant affords us, and I’m looking forward to filling these positions and welcoming new firefighters to our team.”
Today’s firefighters do far more than fight fires. They are the first ones called to respond to chemical and environmental emergencies, ranging from the suspected presence of carbon monoxide to a gas leak. They may be called to rescue a child who has fallen through the ice or who has locked himself in a bathroom. They rescue people from stalled elevators and those who are trapped in vehicle crashes. They test and maintain their equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), hydrants, hoses, power tools and apparatus.
The Sudbury Fire Department is actively seeking applicants for the open positions. The department is an equal opportunity employer, and encourages women, veterans and people of color to apply.
