Newbury Fire Department Extinguishes Plum Island Fire

NEWBURY — Chief Douglas Janvrin reports that the Newbury Fire Department responded to a house fire on Plum Island Saturday night.

At 9:53 p.m., Newbury Firefighters were dispatched to 10 10th St. for a report of a kitchen fire. While en route to the scene, crews on Engine 10 and Ladder 3 observed heavy flames, and confirmed upon arrival that heavy fire was showing from the second and third floors of the home.

A second alarm was struck shortly after the first crews arrived, and firefighters initiated an interior attack. However, conditions inside the home deteriorated quickly, prompting firefighters to evacuate and begin an exterior attack. At one point, the fire extended to a neighboring structure before being quickly knocked down.

All occupants inside the home were able to evacuate safely, and one firefighter was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The firefighter was subsequently treated and released.

The Newbury Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Newburyport, Salisbury and Rowley Fire Departments, as well as the Seacoast Chief Fire Officers Mutual Aid District/Rye Fire Department air trailer, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Rehabilitation Unit and Atlantic Ambulance.

The Georgetown, Amesbury and West Newbury Fire Departments answered a mutual aid call out to provide station coverage.

“This was a stubborn fire that was made more challenging by extreme cold, but all of the crews on scene did an excellent job to extinguish it and prevent further damage to neighboring homes,” Chief Janvrin said. “The actions of the initial crews played a key role in our efforts last night, and I want to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their support.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Newbury Fire Department.
