Nahant Firefighters Wear Full Gear for Street Hockey Game as Part of Multifaceted Training Program
NAHANT — Chief Michael Feinberg is pleased to announce that members of the Nahant Fire Department recently took part in a variety of training exercises, including one that required them to don their turnout gear for a game of street hockey.
Firefighters spent part of their day on Saturday, Jan. 5, playing street hockey while wearing their full gear and self contained breathing apparatus. The exercise was meant to help firefighters evaluate their air consumption.
Members continued playing until their tanks were empty in order to simulate the experience of physical exertion while attempting to draw air from an empty tank.
The department’s members also participated in a training session that simulated physically demanding activities that might be required of them while responding to a fire. They performed a variety of tasks during that portion of the training, including running hoses, simulating forced entry into a structure and overhauling a ceiling following a fire.
Participants also underwent Rapid Intervention Team training, which required them to practice essential techniques they would need to make entry, search, locate and conduct rescue and removal of a downed colleague during a working fire.
“Each of these activities gives our firefighters a chance to better understand their equipment and the physical demands of their jobs, while also learning how to work better together,” Chief Feinberg said. “These exercises also help ensure that they’re as prepared as possible to locate and assist one another in an emergency situation.”
