Stoneham Fire and Police Departments Respond to Car into Building
STONEHAM — Fire Chief Matthew Grafton and Police Chief James McIntyre report that the fire and police departments responded to a local business this morning after a resident drove her car into the storefront.
At 8:52 a.m., Stoneham Police received a report of a car into a building at The Daily Scoop, 232 Main St. Police, the fire department’s Engine 2 and Ladder 1, along with Action Ambulance responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, first responders located a 90-year-old Stoneham woman sitting inside the store after she had crashed her 2009 Toyota Camry into the front bay window.
The woman was evaluated on scene by Stoneham fire and EMS, but declined further medical treatment. An employee who was opening the store suffered a non-life threatening injury and was also evaluated on scene, but declined further medical treatment.
An on scene investigation indicated that the woman was in the shopping plaza for a hair appointment. As she circled the plaza to find a parking spot, the sun got into her eyes, and she continued to accelerate into the building.
“We’re grateful that the store wasn’t open for business because the extent of the damage occurred where patrons would normally be sitting,” Chief Grafton said.
The Daily Scoop sustained serious damage to the inside and outside of the store, and will not open. The Stoneham Building Inspector has been notified. All remaining businesses in the area were not affected and will open with regularly scheduled hours.
The incident remains under investigation by the Stoneham Police Department.
