Rockport Police Investigating Fatal Incident at Pebble Beach Involving Scuba Diver
ROCKPORT — Chief John Horvath reports that the Rockport Police Department is investigating after a fatal diving incident occurred at Pebble Beach this morning.
At 10:06 a.m., Rockport Police received a 911 call for a diver in distress at Pebble Beach. Crews from the Rockport and Gloucester Fire Departments, along with Beauport Ambulance Service were also dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, first responders located a group of three individuals surrounding the diver, later identified as Andrzej Holowenczak, age 53, of Wilmington, and immediately began delivering CPR.
The diver was transported via ambulance to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, where he was later pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Holowenczak was in a scuba diving group — consisting of himself and three other people — in the area. At some point while in the water, members of the group realized he was unresponsive and pulled him to shore where they immediately dialed 911.
No foul play is suspected, however the incident remains under active investigation by the Rockport Police Department.
