Bedford Police Cruiser Involved in Motor Vehicle Crash
BEDFORD, N.H. — Chief John J. Bryfonski reports that a Bedford Police Department cruiser was involved in a motor vehicle crash late Saturday evening.
A preliminary investigation indicates that an on-duty Bedford police officer, operating a marked police cruiser, was attempting to stop a vehicle for a violation at approximately 10:15 p.m. The attempted motor vehicle stop occurred at the intersection of South River and Kilton road. The cruiser proceeded through the intersection with its emergency lights activated when it collided with a third vehicle.
The impact of the crash sent the cruiser into a near-by tree. The police officer and the operator of the third vehicle, identified as a 56-year-old Bedford woman, were both transported to local hospitals. The police officer was treated and released, and the other motorist was admitted with injuries that are serious but not believed to be life-threatening.
Both vehicles sustained serious damage. The police cruiser was considered a total loss.
The officer had been attempting to stop a black sedan after it ran two red lights while traveling north on South River Road: first at the Market and Main entrance and then at the Kilton Road intersection. That driver did not remain on scene.
The intersection was closed for several hours while the scene was investigated by the Bedford Technical Accident Reconstruction Team.
The incident remains under investigation by the Bedford Police Department. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to call Bedford Police at 603-472-5113.
