Stoneham Fire Department Extinguishes Fire at Honey Dew Donuts
STONEHAM — Chief Matthew Grafton reports that the Stoneham Fire Department extinguished a fire at Honey Dew Donuts this morning after a bathroom fan ignited.
Just before 9:30 a.m., Stoneham Fire received a box alarm alert from Honey Dew, 362 Main St., for a smoke odor in the building.
Because of the immediate proximity to the station, firefighters from Group 2 were able to arrive to the scene in less than a minute.
Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke in the building and immediately evacuated employees. Inside the single occupant bathroom, crews discovered a small plastic item, later determined to be the vent from the ceiling fan, on the floor burning.
After further investigation, firefighters determined that the fan had caught fire, igniting the vent, which then fell to the floor. They made an immediate attack, quickly extinguishing the flames and preventing extension into the walls and other parts of the building.
The ceiling sustained fire and smoke damage, and the underside baseboards of the unoccupied apartment upstairs sustained fire damage.
“Given that the station is about a block from Honey Dew Donuts, were were able to quickly arrive and swiftly extinguish the fire before it extended,” Capt. Jim Marshall said. “This fire could’ve easily traveled into the second floor had our response not been immediate. I want to commend Group 2 firefighters for their work this morning.”
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 10:46 a.m. and the health and electrical inspectors arrived to check the building. During the incident, the Wakefield Fire Department provided station coverage.
Honey Dew is closed for the remainder of the day.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Stoneham Fire Department.
