North Haven Fire to Host ‘Stop the Bleed’ Training at High School
NORTH HAVEN, CT — Chief Paul Januszewski reports that members of the North Haven Fire Department will be training teachers and staff on the Stop the Bleed program this week, which prepares people to handle life-threatening bleeding before paramedics arrive during an emergency.
“With student and school safety being a top priority, training teachers and school staff how to respond to a potentially catastrophic event will hopefully help to save lives,” Chief Januszewski said. “Being prepared and well-versed on current best practices and safety methods is one of the best defenses we can have in an emergency situation.”
WHEN:
Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 8 a.m.
WHERE:
North Haven High School, 221 Elm St., North Haven
WHAT:
The North Haven Public Schools will be the first school district in the state to undergo the Stop the Bleed training.
The 90-minute class teaches participants how and when to use tourniquets, how and when to pack wounds and other ways to stop dangerous bleeding.
While the training can be used during an armed intruder event, it can also be helpful for more likely scenarios, such as trauma and injury during recess or sporting events.
The North Haven Fire Department is sponsoring the training and has called upon trainers, physicians and nurses from across the state to teach the course.
As part of the program, bleeding control kits will be purchased and installed within each North Haven elementary school and multiple kits will be placed in the middle school and high school. The kits contain items like latex gloves, compression bandages and tourniquets.
About Stop the Bleed:
The Stop the Bleed campaign was initiated by a federal inter-agency work group convened by National Security Council staff. The purpose of the campaign is to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding following everyday emergencies and man-made and natural disasters. Advances made by military medicine and research in hemorrhage control during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have informed the work of this initiative which exemplifies translation of knowledge back to the homeland to the benefit of the general public.
