Canton Fire Department to Host CERT Open House Wednesday
CANTON — Chief Charles Doody would like to invite residents and members of the public to attend the Canton Fire Department’s CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Open House on Wednesday.
WHEN:
Wednesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.
WHERE:
Canton Fire Department training room, 99 Revere St.
WHAT:
Come learn about Canton CERT at their informational open house tomorrow night.
The Canton CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a group of community volunteers trained to augment the Canton Police and Fire Departments during emergencies or large events.
CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects.
“I think today’s multiple tornado warnings throughout the state highlights the importance of preparedness when the unexpected occurs,” Chief Doody said. “CERT members are not only a valuable asset to the community, but the training they undergo also prepares them to be able to act in an effective way at a moment’s notice if an emergency or major incident occurs.”
