Tyngsborough Police, Regional SWAT Team, Resolve Armed Standoff
TYNGSBOROUGH — Police Chief Richard D. Howe reports that the Tyngsborough Police Department took a man info custody after he barricaded himself inside his home and allegedly assaulted a relative, threatened to harm police and brandished a large knife.
Out of an abundance of caution, Tyngsborough Police officers made the decision to activate the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT Team, which brings highly-trained police officers drawn from more than 60 municipalities to the scene under the local control of Tyngsborough Police.
The call came in at 1:25 a.m. and by 3:30 NEMLEC SWAT negotiators were able to convince the suspect to surrender without further incident.
Chief Howe praised the professionalism of the Tyngsborough and SWAT officers working together toward a peaceful resolution.
“This is yet another example of the importance of having mutual aid available for municipal police departments in the form of highly-trained, specialized officers who can come in, as part of our command structure, and work to resolve sensitive situations,” Chief Howe said. “Thank you to our fellow law enforcement agencies in Middlesex and Essex counties for your invaluable assistance.”
Under to the Domestic Violence Act of 2014, no further information about this incident may be released, including the suspect’s name, booking photo, the location of the incident, or any information about possible criminal charges. Further media inquiries should be directed to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday.
