Joseph Aiello Appointed as Gloucester Fire Department Assistant Chief and Emergency Management Director
GLOUCESTER — Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken and Fire Chief Eric Smith are pleased to announce that Joseph Aiello was recently appointed as the Gloucester Fire Department’s new Assistant Chief and Emergency Management Director.
Assistant Chief Aiello was appointed to his new position on July 23 by Mayor Theken.
Assistant Chief Aiello, of Gloucester, has worked in the fire service for 32 years. He has spent nearly his entire career with the Gloucester Fire Department, including the last 18 years as a captain. He also worked for the Swampscott Fire Department from 1991-1995.
“Joe has served the Gloucester Fire Department well in his time here and I am confident that he will thrive in his new role,” Chief Smith said. “His extensive experience and knowledge is an asset to the department and the members of the community.”
In 2013, Assistant Chief Aiello received the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Firefighter of the Year Award for his efforts in helping to rescue a 15-year-old girl from a burning house. He has also received several commendations from the City of Gloucester throughout his career.
He has undergone training through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute, where he has taken courses in emergency planning, public information officer awareness and other topics.
He is currently a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators and is a National Board Certified Safety Officer.
“Mr. Aiello is a Gloucester native and has lived here his whole life,” Mayor Theken said. “I wish him all the best in this next chapter of his career and am thankful for his dedication to his hometown.”
