Groveland Police Seek Public’s Assistance After Shot Fired at Motorist

GROVELAND — Chief Jeffrey Gillen reports that the Groveland Police Department is actively seeking the public’s assistance after an investigation revealed today that a shot was fired at a motorist while she was driving through Groveland.

On Tuesday, July 17, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Groveland Police received a report from neighboring West Newbury Police that a woman had both her vehicle’s front windows blown out while driving on Main Street in Groveland.

The victim was driving near the Shanahan Ball Field when the windows shattered. She continued home to West Newbury and then called police.

The victim explained to Groveland Police that while she was traveling west on Main Street, her passenger’s side window was suddenly cracked by a 1.5 inch to 2 inch hole. The window then shattered completely, followed by her driver’s side window. The woman sustained several cuts and bruises from the broken glass.

During the initial investigation, nothing was found in the vehicle that could have caused the windows to shatter.

Today, following further examination of the vehicle, investigators uncovered what appears to be a 9 mm hollow point pistol round on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

No weapons were found at the scene, and residents did not report anything suspicious. While hunting is common in the area, a 9 mm round is most commonly used in handguns and is not typically used for hunting.

“This is a very frightening situation that is uncharacteristic for a town like Groveland,” Chief Gillen said. “We are actively investigating to determine the facts and circumstances behind this incident, and we are asking anyone who may have heard or seen something out of the ordinary to call the Groveland Police Department.”

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, or who may have information, is asked to immediately contact the Groveland Police Department at 978-521-1212.
