Statement of Rockingham County Attorney on Sentencing of Woman Convicted on Child Abuse Charges
BRENTWOOD — Rockingham County Attorney Patricia G. Conway announces that Jami Castine, who was convicted in March for abusing 18-month-old twins, was sentenced in Rockingham County Superior Court today.
Castine was sentenced to 20-40 years committed at the New Hampshire State Prison followed by 10-20 years suspended, on two counts of first degree assault and one count of second degree assault.
County Attorney Conway handled the sentencing and issued the following statement:
“The force these injuries required was horrific. We cannot even imagine what this woman did to cause these injuries. Just imagine how scared and confused these babies were. Imagine the pain and terror that they must have endured at the hands of this defendant. These children were completely at the mercy of this woman.
“The hideous nature of this case calls for and demands serious punishment. The punishment needs to fit the crimes—and the appropriate punishment is substantial committed time at the state prison.
“The court has an opportunity to send a loud and clear message to this defendant and to our community that violence against children—some of the most vulnerable people in our society—will not be tolerated. Children cannot protect themselves, but the criminal justice system can by handing down a tough but just sentence.”
County Attorney Conway was assisted by Assistant County Attorney Ryan Ollis. Attorneys Joseph Malfitani and Eliana Forciniti represented Castine. The sentencing judge was the Honorable N. William Delker.
