Gloucester Fire Department Urges Residents to Sign Up for Emergency Alerts Ahead of Hurricane Season
GLOUCESTER — Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Eric Smith urges those who live or work in Gloucester to sign up for the city’s emergency alert system now that hurricane season is officially underway.
While tropical storms and hurricanes are more common in August and September, the storm season began on June 1, and can strike with devastating impacts on coastal cities like Gloucester at any time.
Gloucester Emergency Alerts, powered by Smart911, is the official emergency notification system used by the city to communicate with residents and business owners during a broad range of emergencies.
The system provides updates in all sorts of emergency situations — including evacuation orders, flooding advisories or lockdown situations — as well as information about parking bans, road closures, traffic alerts and other need-to-know information.
“You don’t want to wait until an emergency situation is already underway before signing up for these alerts,” Chief Smith said. “Our system provides essential updates during all kinds of emergencies so that everyone has the information they need to keep themselves, their homes and their businesses safe. I hope that everyone will take the proactive step of signing up for the alerts now, before the summer storm season truly gets going.”
You can sign up for the alerts by clicking here, and choose to receive alerts by text, email or voice message.
