Bridgewater Police Department Commemorates National Police Week
BRIDGEWATER — Chief Christopher D. Delmonte is pleased to announce that the Bridgewater Police Department is commemorating National Police Week this week.
National Police Week runs from May 13 to May 19 and is observed throughout the United States as a way to honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
Tuesday was Peace Officers Memorial Day. It was first held in 1962 after being designated as a national day of observance by President John F. Kennedy.
Police departments throughout the country hold vigils and memorial services to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
In 2017, there were 129 line of duty deaths, including 46 officers that died from gunfire, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. The number of firearms-related law enforcement officer fatalities is up 56% this year in comparison to this time last year.
Each year, more than 30,000 law enforcement officers and their families travel to Washington D.C. to observe National Police Week. On Sunday, May 13, a candlelight vigil was held on the National Mall with thousands in attendance.
