Newport Police Department Commemorates National Police Week
NEWPORT, VERMONT — Chief Seth C. DiSanto is pleased to announce that the Newport Police Department is commemorating National Police Week this week.
National Police Week runs from May 13 to May 19 and is observed throughout the United States as a way to honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
The American flag outside of the Newport Police station will be flown at half-staff today and officers will be wearing black mourning bands over their badges.
Today is Peace Officers Memorial Day, which was first held in 1962 after being designated as a national day of observance by President John F. Kennedy.
Police departments throughout the country hold vigils and memorial services to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“This is a very special week for all law enforcement officers as a way to pay our respects to those who have died or have been injured in the line of duty,” Chief DiSanto said. “In a perfect world, everyone would to go home to their families safely every day. However, that is not the case sometimes and their sacrifices should never be forgotten.”
Each year, more than 30,000 law enforcement officers and their families travel to Washington D.C. to observe National Police Week. On Sunday, a candlelight vigil was held on the National Mall with thousands in attendance.
