Burlington Police Department to Host Mock Crash Ahead of Prom Season
BURLINGTON — Chief Michael Kent reports that the Burlington Police Department will host a mock car crash at Burlington High School to make students aware of the consequences of impaired and distracted driving.
WHERE:
Burlington High School, 123 Cambridge St.
WHEN:
Friday, May 11, at 8:30 a.m.
WHO:
- Burlington Police
- Burlington Fire
- BHS juniors and seniors
- Sullivan Funeral Home
- Boston MedFlight
- Lahey Clinic
WHAT:
With prom season approaching, BHS juniors and seniors will gather for a mock crash that will feature an in-depth simulation of the real world impacts of the decisions they make while driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The presentation will begin with a video in the auditorium before students transition outside to watch as first responders from multiple agencies react in real time to a staged crash on the high school campus.
Police and firefighters will provide treatment to those involved in the crash, with Boston MedFlight landing and transporting one of the victims by helicopter. Another three will be transported away from the scene by ambulances. A fourth victim — who will have been ejected from the vehicle students were traveling in — will be pronounced “dead” and be transported from the scene by Sullivan Funeral Home.
The driver of the vehicle will undergo a field sobriety test and subsequently be placed under arrest.
“This highly realistic presentation will give students an up-close view of the catastrophic impacts of impaired and distracted driving,” Chief Kent said. “I want to thank all of our partner agencies for making this possible, and I sincerely hope that what the students see will resonate with them and help guide their decision making during prom season and beyond.”
Following the completion of the crash scene, students will return to the auditorium to learn more about what would happen following a crash like the one they will be witnessing.
