Bridgewater Fire and Police Departments Investigating Fire at Apartment Building

BRIDGEWATER — Fire Chief Thomas Levy and Police Chief Christopher D. Delmonte report that the Bridgewater Fire and Police Departments are investigating a suspicious fire that ignited over the weekend at a downtown apartment building.

At approximately 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, a 911 caller reported a fire on the second floor roof of 40 Central Square. The three-and-a-half story building has commercial space on the ground floor and 18 apartments on the second and third floors.

The fire was extinguished and contained to the second floor roof. A resident also helped to contain the spread of the flames by utilizing a fire extinguisher prior to the arrival of the firefighters.

The Bridgewater Fire Department headquarters, 22 School St., is just around the corner to the building, which allowed the firefighters to quickly respond to the scene.

“There were a lot of residents in this building at the time of the fire,” Chief Levy said. “Thankfully we were right next door and were able to quickly put out the flames.”

About 20 residents were evacuated from the building and no injuries were reported. The residents were all able to return to their apartments after the scene was cleared.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a pile of clothes had been lit on fire and was found on the second floor roof.

The circumstances and details of the fire are under investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Bridgewater Fire Department at 508-697-0900 or the Bridgewater Police Department at 508-697-6118.
