Maynard Receives Complete Streets Grant
MAYNARD — Acting Town Administrator Andrew Scribner-MacLean is pleased to announce that Maynard has recently been awarded a Complete Streets grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
The $150,492 grant will fund a number of new sidewalk curb extensions and improvements over the next year.
The goal of the Complete Streets initiative is aimed at making streets and streetscapes better looking, greener, smarter and able to safely accommodate a variety of transportation modes, including pedestrian activity. All of Maynard’s sidewalk improvements will also be in line with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“Grants play an important role in small communities like Maynard, especially to fund repairs and upgrades to infrastructure,” Scribner-MacLean said. “Maynard is committed to making our streets a safe and functional space for pedestrians, bicyclists, downtown shoppers and motorists alike, and this grant will allow us to make numerous improvements to accomplish that goal.”
Maynard’s Board of Selectmen adopted a Complete Streets resolution in 2016 and completed a temporary pilot program to test out potential future roadway improvements on Summer Street, Nason Street and Main Street in July 2016.
Thanks to support from Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration, MassDOT and the Maynard Board of Selectmen, the town was able to move forward with the planned improvements much sooner than anticipated. Without grant funding, Complete Streets projects would have been delayed until at least the next fiscal year.
Scribner-MacLean also emphasized that both State Rep. Kate Hogan and State Sen. Jamie Eldridge have been champions of Maynard’s Complete Streets efforts since day one, adding, “Without a doubt, their leadership has helped Maynard compete for grants such as this.”
Principles of the Complete Streets initiative will also likely be incorporated into Maynard’s Master Plan, which is expected to be finalized in the next year and a half.
