Melrose Middle School Student Falls Through Thin Ice on Ell Pond
MELROSE — Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School Principal Brent Conway reports that a seventh grade student fell through the ice on Ell Pond this morning and was transported to an area hospital as a precaution.
At approximately 7:40 a.m., the Melrose Police Department received a 911 call reporting that someone had fallen through the ice on Ell Pond near Tremont Street.
Melrose Police and Fire responded to the scene and, upon arrival, found four seventh grade students, two boys and two girls, on the shore of Ell Pond.
An on-scene investigation revealed that the four seventh grade students were walking to school when one of the boys ventured out onto the ice and fell in up to his chest. A seventh grade boy and girl were able to pull him from the water while the other seventh grade girl called 911.
The boy who had fallen through the ice was transported via ambulance to the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
Given the fluctuation in weather, Melrose Police and school officials would like to remind the community to remain off the ice, as it seldom freezes or thaws at a uniform rate.
